Photo-series, size and medium variable
The photo series Rocks (2024-2025) addresses the extraction of resources and portrays rocks and minerals that have shaped trade in Sicily, such as salt and sulfur, as well as rocks like basalt and limestone, along with fossils.
The photos show fragments of the rocks at the locations where they were mined. The prints reproduce the rock and hand holding them in life-size. Some photos were developed in several steps. For example, for the Libeccio Antico image a core drilling sample of the historic limestone was collected in Custonaci and then brought to Berlin for polishing. The following year, the processed rock was returned to Sicily and photographed in the quarry where it originally came from.
One photo features a geologist’s hammer shot at the Carburangeli Cave as a reference to its history. The cave, known for fossils, was excavated unregulated in the 19th century and its fossils are now part of geological collections across Europe. At the same time the collection of fossils from this cave held in Palermo disappeared during Second World War, when collections from Palermo´s museums were moved to protect them from destruction.
