Fern Pavilion

Fern Pavilion
2025
Preexisting pavilion structure, concrete, ferns, spray mist irrigation system, water
300x300x280cm

The site-specific installation Fern Pavilion appropriates on one of the few existing architectural elements in Krämerwald: a pavilion made of narrow aluminum rods, which stands almost invisibly in a clearing like a line drawing. For the installation, the pavilion is converted into a refuge for ferns, complete with an irrigation system. Plant labels mark the 18 different ferns. The irrigation system sprays a fine mist of water into the pavilion, and visitors can cool off on hot summer days on the central concrete platform in the middle of the pavilion.
The work combines elements of renaturation, botanical laboratory, and domesticated garden. Time will tell whether the ferns will be able to colonize the forest beyond the pavilion or whether they will remain dependent on this artificial habitat.

Fern Pavilion was realized as part of the long-term project Forest Research Platform, Krämerwald forest, Schönwalde-Glien (Havelland, Brandenburg).
